John Gatonbe is believed to have been on James Hall's last Greenland expedition in 1612, and the map is usually dated from that year. However, it is not impossible that it was done somewhat later than that and the basis is a map from Hall or other information from him. The map was first printed in Volume 6 (1732) of A Collection of Voyages and Travels but the copies shown here are probably from the third edition 1746.
