Islandia

A French map dealer in Paris, Hieronymus Gourmont, published in 1548 a copy of the Iceland section of Carta Marina. In two corners we see framed text which is a version of the text that accompanied the map by Olaus Magnus. The text is primarly a description of the country. On a ship in the bottom left hand corner we see the year 1546 and it is likely that the wood-carving is from that year. If we look at the map as a whole we see it is a quite a good copy of Iceland as it appears on Carta Marina. One place-name has been added, the volcano that was nameless has gotten the name Helgefelt. Only one copy of the map by Gourmont exists today and is preserved in the Grossherzogliche Bibliothek in Weimar. The map shown here is a copy of unknown origin.
