L'Islande

Pierre Duval was son-in-law and disciple of Nicolas Sanson, the chief pioneer of cartography in France. He published a few map collections and also made separate maps that appeared in various travel accounts and other books of that kind. In 1663 Isaac de La Peyrére wrote a short description of Iceland, Relation de l'Islande, which was accompanied by a separate map of the country by Pierre Duval. The map is a copy of the one by Joris Carolus but with various novelties, apparently based on material in the book itself.
Duval's map appeared with a Latin title, Insula Islandia, in Geographia Universalis das ist allgemeine Erd-Beschreibung (1681) by Duval and Johann Christoph Beer. It was also one of many maps that were part of a collection of accounts of voyages to the north, Recueil de Voiages au Nord (1715).
