It was around 1590 that Matthias Quad, engraver and geographer in Cologne, began to prepare a new map collection. The first part of it was published in Latin in 1592 and one of the maps is an overview of Europe. It is nothing more than a reduced version of Ortelius' map of the continent from 1587. Iceland is largely unchanged but there are somewhat fewer place names. In 1600, Quad published an expanded edition of his map collection, and this time the book has a German title, Geographisch Handtbuch, and all reading texts are in that language.
