    "@value" : "When the survey of 1721-1734 by Magnús Arason and Thomas Hans Henrik Knoff was complete, the Danish authorities were in no hurry to undertake further work of this kind. Some individuals realised that the lack of charts of the coasts and the neighbouring sea-lanes was likely to lead to difficulties, and the matter was not allowed to rest, but nothing was actually done, even though advice was sought and plans made. It was a serious inconvenience to the trading companies not to be able to find anywhere information as to the most suitable and safest entries to the various harbours. All kinds of accidents and losses were the result. It is also likely that the French expedition to the North Atlantic may have provoked the Danes into getting down to work, and that they did not regard it entirely without concern.<br />In 1776 an experienced Danish captain in the service of the trading company was sent to Iceland, Hans Erik Minor by name. His task was to survey all the coasts and harbours, and investigate the fishing grounds and everything else involved in the preparation of charts. Minor worked for two summers, by which time he had completed his survey of the area from Reykjanes via Faxaflói and the northern part of Snæfellsnes as far as Stykkishólmur. He returned to Iceland again in the spring 1778 intending to continue the work, but fell overboard and was drowned in Hafnarfjördur shortly after his arrival.<br />The survey was suspended for the time being and put off for nearly a quarter of a century in spite of undertakings that it would be resumed.<br />Before his death, Minor had completed an overall chart of the whole area of the survey as well as separate charts on a larger scale for individual sectors and all places which he considered suitable for harbours. His originals are still preserved in the Danish Hydrographic Office in Copenhagen. They were not printed at the time, until 1788, when Poul de Løvenørn published them with a few corrections and alterations.<br />Løvenørn's publication of Minor's charts and the accompanying description of the coasts marked an end of an important chapter, and applied to precisely those regions where most sailing could be expected. But there was still a long way to go before the projected task of surveying and charting all the coasts of the country was completed."

    "@value" : "Eftir að landmælingunum 1721-1734, á vegum þeirra Magnúsar Arasonar og Thomasar Knoff, lauk virtist sem dönsk stjórnvöld hefðu um tíma misst áhugann á kortagerð af Íslandi.<br />Það hafði löngum verið versluninni nokkurt óhagræði að engin sæmileg sjókort voru til af ströndum Íslands né innsiglingum á hafnir þess. Árið 1773 hafði konungur tekið við Íslandsversluninni og átti eftir að reka hana, á meðan einokunin hélt velli, til 1787. Hann hóf brátt undirbúning að útgerð fiskiskipa hér við land í meira mæli en áður hafði tíðkast. Ekki er ósennilegt að þetta og leiðangrar Frakka til rannsókna og sjómælinga á norðanverðu Atlantshafi hafi ýtt undir að Danir hæfust handa um gerð strandkorta af Íslandi. Málið dróst á langinn til 1776 er reyndur skipstjóri í þjónustu verslunarinnar, Hans Erik Minor, var sendur til landsins til að annast verkið. Verkefni hans var að mæla strandir og hafnir Íslands, aðgæta líkleg fiskimið og gera áreiðanleg sjókort. Minor drukknaði í Hafnarfjarðarhöfn 1778 og hafði þá lokið við mælingu Reykjaness til Snæfellsness. Hann gerði heildarkort af öllu svæðinu auk sérkorta í smærri mælikvarða af afmörkuðum hlutum þess. Minor var skipstjóri en ekki kortagerðar- eða landmælingamaður og hefur það eflaust gert honum verkið erfitt. En þrátt fyrir að kort hans gætu verið betur unnin voru þau fyrstu raunverulegu sjókortin í nútíma skilningi er gerð voru af hluta íslensku strandarinnar.<br />Við dauða Minors enduðu kort hans í vörslu stjórnarnefndar Íslandsverslunarinnar og virtist sem ekkert lægi á að gefa þau út. Þegar Danir komu á fót Sjómælingastofnun (Det kongelige danske Søkort-Arkiv) árið 1784 voru þau flutt þangað. Forstöðumaður stofnunarinnar frá byrjun og lengi síðan var Poul de Løvenørn. Þegar kort Minors komust í hendur hans fór hann strax að huga að útgáfu þeirra. Hann sá fljótt að kortunum væri talsvert áfátt og þau þyrftu lagfæringa við. Hann endurtók nokkrar af athugunum Minors, dró kort hans upp að nýju og bætti ýmsu við þau. Árið 1788 komu kortin út með endurbótum Løvenørns. Þau eru fjögur að tölu, eitt er yfirlitskort af öllu svæðinu sem Minor mældi en hin þrjú eru af meginhluta Faxaflóasvæðisins í minni mælikvarða. Þau sýna ekki hvernig umhorfs er inn til landsins enda var þeim eingöngu ætlað að vera strandkort með dýptartölum og grynningum til að vísa leiðina að landi. Á kortunum eru líka nokkrar landkenningarmyndir eða strandsýni farmönnum til leiðbeiningar við landtöku og siglingar á hafnir."
