"@value" : "The year 1539 is an important one in the cartographic history of the North. In this year Olaus Magnus, a Swedish ecclesiastic, published his map of the Northern Countries, Carta Marina, which was printed on nine sheets and ranked among the largest maps yet made. When we start looking around for likely sources or models for Olaus' map, we run into a number of problems. He had travelled widely in Sweden and visited Norway and thus was far better informed about this region than his predecessors, as is amply proved by the superiority of his map to all previous maps of Scandinavia. When we come to the shape of Iceland it has been suggested that Olaus might have spoken to Iceland voyagers in the seaports of Northern Germany and the Netherlands, from them he could have picked up knowledge of many sorts. The ocean in Carta Marina is provided with number of whales, monsters and ships but inland we see pictures from national life and nature. Olaus' version of Iceland was quick to become the dominant one and was closely followed by many cartographers throughout the 16th century and into the 17th.
\r\nThe German Sebastian Münster was one of the first cartographers to follow Olaus' example. In his updated edition of Ptolemy's Geographia and in his most famous book, Cosmographia, we find a map of the Northern countries loosely based on Carta Marina. It is rather unsightly done and the only place-name is Heckl'berg (Hekla). The older map shown here is from an edition of Geographia (1545) with a name in Latin, Septentrionales regiones, but the younger one is from Cosmographia with a long name in German: Gemeine beschreibung aller Mittnächtigen Länder/ Schweden/ Gothen/ Nordwegien/ Deñmarck/ rc."

"@value" : "Árið 1539 markar ákveðin tímamót í sögu kortagerðar af Norðurlöndunum. Það ár kom út í Feneyjum kort af löndunum í norðri eftir sænska klerkinn Olaus Magnus. Kortið var prentað eftir tréskurði á níu blöðum og er eitt að stærstu kortum síns tíma eða 125x170 sm. Lítið er vitað um hvað Olaus hafði fyrir sér þegar hann vann að gerð kortsins. Hann hafði ferðast um Svíþjóð og Noreg og hafði því yfir meiri vitneskju að ráða um þetta svæði heldur en fyrri kortagerðarmenn enda slær kort hans öll önnur út. Um heimildir að Íslandsgerð kortsins hafa menn getið sér þess til að Olaus hafi leitað til Hansakaupmanna og fengið hjá þeim upplýsingar um landið. Carta marina, eins og kortið er kallað á latnesku, er prýtt fjölda mynda. Hafið er krökkt af hvölum, ófreskjum og skipum og í landi eru myndir úr þjóðlífi, atvinnuvegum og náttúru. Íslandsgerð Norðurlandakorts Olaus Magnus ruddi sér skjótt til rúms og þokaði eldri kortum úr sessi. Þó að nýjar gerðir kæmu fram undir lok 16. aldar var komið fram á hina 17. þegar áhrifa þess hætti að gæta.
\r\nÞýski fræðimaðurinn Sebastian Münster var einn af þeim fyrstu sem tóku sér hið nýja kort til fyrirmyndar og komu því á framfæri. Um miðja 16. öld gaf hann út endurbætta útgáfu á Landafræði Ptolemeusar, Geographia universalis vetus et nova. Í henni má finna Norðurlandakort sem er lauslega sniðið eftir korti Olausar. Kortið er prentað eftir heldur ósnotru tréskurðarmóti enda er Ísland (Iszland) frekar óliðlega gert. Megindráttum landsins svipar til Olaus en allt er með fátæklegra sniði enda stærðarmunur talsverður. Eina örnefnið er Heckl'berg (Hekla). Í frægustu bók Münster, Cosmographia, birtist líka þetta sama kort en hún byrjaði að koma út stuttu eftir Geografíuna. Eldra kortið sem sýnt er hér kemur úr útgáfu á Geographia frá 1545 með heiti á latnesku, Septentrionales regiones, en það yngra úr Cosmographia (1578) með löngu nafni á þýsku: Gemeine beschreibung aller Mittnächtigen Länder/ Schweden/ Gothen/ Nordwegien/ Deñmarck/ rc."
