"@value" : "At the end of the 16th century and well into the 17th some attempts were made by Icelanders to produce a map of the North Atlantic, probably in connection with Danish efforts to rediscover Greenland, but as far as the Icelandic settlements there and their voyages to the east coast of North America were concerned, the Icelanders themselves were the only source of information, so that their activities in this field were directed exclusively towards reconciling the old written accounts with modern maps and finding confirmation of the existence of the various places mentioned in them. The best-known and oldest of these maps is by Sigurdur Stefánsson, headmaster of the school at Skálholt (1590). Bishop Gudbrandur Thorláksson also made an important map of the North (1606). There exists also a drawing of the same region by Jón Gudmundsson, sometimes known as the Learned (ca. 1656); and finally bishop Thórdur Thorláksson made two such drafts in the years 1668-1669. Both these drawings and the map of bishop Gudbrandur exist in the original, but for the rest there are only copies of varying quality. This one is from the book Gronlandia antiqva by Thormódur Torfason.
These maps give only a very rough picture of Iceland, though they all represent an important stage in the history of the cartography of Greenland."

"@value" : "Undir lok 16. aldar og á þeirri 17. gerðu nokkrir Íslendingar kort af norðanverðu Atlantshafi og löndunum í kring. Þeir freistuðu þess að samræma fornar íslenskar frásagnir um landaskipan á þessum slóðum við kort þau er þá voru í mestu gengi eða menn höfðu við höndina. Kortin voru í það smáum mælikvarða að erfitt var að gera Íslandi viðhlítandi skil enda var gerð þess í rauninni aukaatriði. Fyrir kortagerðarmönnunum vakti að gera grein fyrir siglingum Íslendinga vestur um haf til Grænlands og Ameríku. Gerð þeirra flestra stóð sennilega í sambandi við fyrirætlanir Danakonunga um að ná að nýju tangarhaldi á Grænlandi. Kort þessi eru í rauninni frekar hluti af kortasögu Grænlands en Íslands.
Af öllum kortunum eru til nokkrar mismunandi eftirmyndir en tvö þeirra eru ekki lengur til í frumgerð. Kort Guðbrands er varðveitt í Konungsbókhlöðu í Kaupmannahöfn en þetta er eftirmynd, talsvert breytt, frá 1706 úr Gronlandia antiqva eftir Þormóð Torfason. Frumgerð kortsins er einföld að allri gerð og hefur varla verið nema riss. Eins og vænta mátti svipar lögun Íslands á henni til korta þeirra er Abraham Ortelius (1590) og Gerhard Mercator (1595) gerðu eftir Íslandskorti biskups. En á eftirgerðinni úr bók Þormóðar kemst Íslandsgerð Guðbrands af einhverjum ástæðum ekki til skila og landið verður frekar ólögulegt. Á Íslandi eru sex örnefni en kortið er markað bókstöfunum A til O sem vísa til fylgitexta."
